“We don’t have power or authority to dictate or design any curriculum; that’s up to the schools and the districts to do,” says committee member Danyika Leonard. “That’s not in our directive, nor is it in our ability to do it.”
“It wasn’t just about Black history,” Leonard said. “It was about the history of the Indigenous peoples, it was the history of the African diaspora, it was the history of the Great Migration.”
“It’s about telling the whole story, not just parts of the story that make us feel good,” Danyika Leonard, policy director at Education Evolving, and a member of the committee, said of the addition of ethnic studies.

“I’m proud of the brilliant scholars that came together to create the standards and just support and offer their expertise,” she said. “I’m proud of the community’s support around ethnic studies specifically.”
“This is an opportunity to have Minnesota scholars and educators and students learn about each other and learn who they are and have their humanity honored and that of their classmates,” said Leonard, policy director at Education Evolving, an organization that promotes student-centered learning and school choice.

“Ethnic studies enables all students to better understand the rich heritage, culture, and history of the land upon which we live, told from multiple and diverse perspectives,” Leonard wrote in a letter to lawmakers in support of the bill.
In the United States, English is not the official language but the dominant one. But for many students, the dominance of English instruction has come at the expense of losing their first language.
